Laser Vision Correction at KERATO®

ReLEx (Refractive Lenticule Extraction) SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction) is the most advanced laser vision correction procedures.

ReLEx Smile uses state-of-the-art femtosecond technology to create a high-precision thin circular disc of tissue that is removed through a small incision in the cornea. The incision made with SMILE is less than 4 mm. The whole treatment process is then undertaken using the Zeiss Femtosecond Laser as a single step. The treatment usually takes between 10 and 15 minutes.

LASIK has become the most widely performed and accepted form of laser vision correction. LASIK can give patients with common vision problems, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, improved vision. This can help to reduce their dependency on glasses or contact lenses, and in some cases eliminate their dependency entirely.

The LASIK procedure involves two steps; the creation of the corneal flap by a precision flap making instrument, and the reshaping of the cornea with an excimer laser.

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a laser eye surgery that first debuted in 1986 Like other commonly performed laser eye surgeries, PRK uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea and correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK – which creates a flap in the outer layer of the cornea – PRK surgery removes the epithelium, the thin surface layer of the cornea in order to reshape the cornea. This method eliminates the risk of flap complications and reduces the risk of removing too much of the cornea.

Recovery time after PRK surgery is slower than after LASIK eye surgery because the epithelial cells need to regenerate across the surface of the eye. Patients with large pupils, dry eyes, or thin corneas are good candidates for PRK surgery.

LASIK/SMILE Surgery Preparation Instructions

Contact Lenses:
- Stop wearing soft contact lenses (including colored lenses) 7 days before surgery.
- Stop wearing hard/RGP lenses 3 weeks before surgery, as they can alter corneal shape.
Medications & Eye Drops:
- Fill your prescribed eye drops (provided at consultation) and bring them with you.
- Do not start using them before surgery—instructions will be given post-procedure.
Transportation:
- You cannot drive on the day of surgery. Arrange for a driver or transportation.
Personal Care & Hygiene:
- Avoid eye makeup, lotions, and scented products (perfume, cologne, hairspray) on surgery day.
Post-Surgery Essentials:
- Have plenty of preservative-free artificial tears (e.g., Systane PF, Refresh PF) ready for use.
- Keep sunglasses handy—your eyes may be sensitive to light.
Clothing:
- Wear comfortable, non-shedding clothing on the day of surgery.
Food & Drinks:
- Eat a light breakfast on surgery day.
- Avoid coffee and energy drinks.
- You can take your regular medications as usual.
