Step by Step

How the KERATO® Color Change Procedure Works

Keratopigmentation is performed in three main steps:

KERATO process step icon

Laser-created tunnel

A femtosecond laser creates a precise intracorneal tunnel in the clear front part of the eye (the cornea). The natural iris and the inside of the eye are not opened.

Placement of medical-grade pigment

A specialized pigment is introduced into this tunnel, in front of your natural iris color. The pigment modifies the apperent eye color, creating the new visible shade.

Precision-driven outcome

Color selection, intensity, and technique are carefully planned during the pre-procedure eye exam to achieve the desired result from the first treatment, minimizing the need for additional intervention and supporting a smooth recovery.

How We Help You Choose Your New Eye Color

You don’t have to choose your shade alone.

During your Pre-Procedure Eye Exam, Dr. Movshovich and the team will:

  • Review your natural iris color, skin tone, and facial features
  • Discuss whether you prefer a subtle change or a more noticeable transformation
  • Send photo simulations with all available KERATO® colors (usually in medium intensity)
  • Explain how lighting, eye position in the orbit, pupil size, and pigment characteristics may influence the final look
  • Help you decide what will feel most natural for your lifestyle and adjust the parameters of the procedure according to your request and desired outcome

Your Pre-Procedure Eye Exam also confirms that your eyes are healthy and safe for the procedure.

Exams are available in both our New York and Miami offices.

Recovery: What to Expect After Surgery

Keratopigmentation at KERATO® is performed by Alexander Movshovich, MD, PhD, a Clinical Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at Weill Cornell with 40+ years in ophthalmic surgery and extensive experience in keratopigmentation.

  • The procedure is performed with topical anesthetic drops; most patients describe pressure rather than pain.
  • Vision is typically blurry for 24 hours, with temporary light sensitivity or a foreign-body sensation.
  • Most patients resume normal routines within 2–3 days while continuing prescribed postoperative drops.
  • When clinically appropriate, up to two color-intensity adjustments may be available after the initial procedure.
